Course Objectives

This course is focused on the analysis of the characteristics of key elements and key processes of strategic management of small and medium enterprises (that represent a relevant portion of Italian GDP).
In particular, the first part of the program is dedicated to the discussion of specific characteristics of SMEs and of most relevant for SMEs sectors, as well as to the understanding of impact of the family ownership on the SMEs management and governance. The second part of the program deals with growth strategy processes and positioning choices of SMEs and considers the specific features related to the creation of a sustainable competitive advantage over time.


Course Content Summary

  • First part: Italian economic context; specific characteristics of SMEs; the qualitative and quantitative definition of SME; structural characteristics of the Italian firms; sectors most relevant for SMEs.
  • Second part: competitive strategies for SMEs; strategic management of SMEs and entrepreneurs’ decision-making processes; the role of the entrepreneurial family in the growth strategies of SMEs; management of the generation succession process; growth from small to medium firm size: growth paths and key influencing factors; non-organic growth process and M&A; international strategies; profitability and financial aspects of growth strategies.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

The exam is in a written form both for attending and for non-attending students.
The students have the faculty to ask for a "group work", which is an integration of the written test.

Prerequisites

Students attending this course are expected to already know the framework, the basic terminology and the essential tools of general management.
