Course Objectives

The course introduces the methodology for analyzing the global economic and financial trends, with special reference to the monetary and exchange rate policies of various advanced and emerging economies. Some lectures deal with the financial aspects of Eu's enlargement.  Issues of international financial stability are discussed as well as the role of the IMF and the problems of regulation, supervision and financial crisis management.

Course Content Summary

The first part of the course is devoted to the basics of exchange rate
determination and to the theoretical elements required to understand the working of the international monetary system. A standard textbook is the reference for this part. The second part discusses current issues of the international financial system (like: the dollar crisis, global inflation, Chinese exchange rate policy, the role of the International Monetary Fund, etc.) concentrating on institutional, policy and factual elements but supporting the analysis with some relevant theoretical references.

Prerequisites

A very basic macro course is the only prerequisite. Students that had already the basics of the first part in another course (like CLEFs students in 6058 or BIEMs' 6060) will be able to substitute the first part with an enlargement of the second part, with the writing of a paper, a presentation to the class.
