Course Content Summary

The course is divided into two parts.
History and dramaturgy of Italian opera (Prof. Andrea Garavaglia):
  • Italian opera is the musical genre that throughout the centuries has contributed most to the definition of Italian history and to the creation of Italian cultural and socio-political identity. On the one hand, analysing significant operas, the first part of the course outlines the historical and aesthetic developments of the genre, always with reference to the cultural and productive context. On the other it shows methods for a musical analysis of opera and a study of its manifold sources (theoretical, literary, musical and audio-visual).
Classical and jazz music: mutual influences (Prof. Paolo Alderighi):
  • The second part of the course analyses the mutual influences between classical and jazz music in the first half of the 20th century. The analysis of musical ensembles, forms and other structural elements lead to the understanding of how and to what extent these two apparently opposed musical worlds influenced each other and in some cases even blended, making the stylistic categorization of some works uncertain. Furthermore, an in-depth study of musical genres and listening approaches, in relation to the radical technological transformations which occurred during the 20th century will lead to a reflection on the concept of art music.
