Course Objectives

The course offers the complete picture of European Copyright Law through the analysis of the European directives (12 classes) and the discussion of the European Courts’ decisions (12 classes). Each week the study of a specific aspect of copyright law (for example subject matter, creativity, infringement etc.) will be complemented by the examination of the main decisions that implement that specific aspect.
CopyrightX option: parallel to the European Copyright Law course, students are offered the option to integrate the EU copyright framework with the US perspective by following online the CopyrightX classes provided by Harvard Law School and by reading and discussing (during the 12 classes dedicated to case discussion) also some relevant US decisions.

Course Content Summary

  • Copyright justification and rationale (CopyrightX option: Copyright theories)
  • European directives on Copyright (US Copyright Act)
  • European Digital Copyright (Digital Millennium Copyright Act)

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

At the end of the course students will be required to pass a written exam on European Copyright Law.
CopyrightX option: the first date indicated for the exam, students that have chosen to attend CopyrightX will be given the possibility to take together the European Copyright Law exam and the CopyrightX exam.
