Course Objectives
Arts and economics have often been conceived as irreconcilable. The reality couldn’t be more different. The cultural sector and the art market have to cope with a set of paradoxes (e.g. economic vs. symbolic performance, competition vs. collaboration, exploration vs. exploitation, creativity vs. efficiency), managers need to be aware of in order to cope with them and manage cultural institutions. Each paradox is examined through a theoretical lens and a real national or international case and / or a guest speaker from museums, heritage, libraries, theatres, opera houses, art fairs, galleries and auction houses.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Understand the transformation of the cultural sector and its future trends.
- Critically assess and discuss the main paradoxes of the cultural sector and art market.
- Manage and cope with these paradoxes, also thanks to the exposure to a set of national and international exemplary cases.
