Course Objectives

This course provides an undergraduate-level introduction to organization theory. The course has two main objectives:
  • the course aims to give an overview of the key issues and arguments within organization theory
  • the course systematically applies organizational theory to practical organizational challenges to highlight the value of theory for organizational analysis and decision making.

Course Content Summary


The course features theories at different levels, e.g. theories about individual level behaviors and cognition, about organizational level characteristics and dynamics, and about inter-organizational arrangements. Each theory is used to explain systematic differences in organizational behavior and outcomes.

Specifically, the course covers the following issues and topics:
  • organizational resources;
  • organizational cognition & decision making;
  • power & dependence;
  • organizational networks ;organizational culture & identity;
  • organization structure & technology;
  • organizational governance;
  • organizational learning;
  • organizational change;
  • inter-organizational networks & alliances;
  • institutional environment;

For Attending and for non-attending
Grading is based on: in class participation, a group project, a class quiz (multiple choice) and a final written exam (multiple choice).

The final written exam is the same for attending and non attending students.
