Course Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide the basic analytical tools allowing to understand the operation of markets in which labour services are exchanged for wages.  Particular emphasis given to the role of institutions in affecting the operation of such markets.

Course Content Summary

The first part of the course provides the key analytical tools to used in the remainder of the course. We begin by introducing static models of allocation of time between work, leisure and home production and briefly review the econometrics of labour supply. The key ingredients of one-sided job search models also be sketched. Next, the focus be on labour demand and on the trade-offs between capital and labour, hours and workers. Finally, labour market equilibrium is characterised and its interactions with developments in the product market assessed.

In the second part of the course the focus be on the ways in which labour market institutions affect wage and employment determination.


Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

The exam is written. 

For students attending the course, there is a 1st partial exam covering Parts I and II.  The mark of the 1st partial  is valid only until the first exam period of the summer session (2nd partial exam). 
Students taking the exam afterwards have to cover the entire program (general exam).
