APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course the students will be able to analyze the main properties and comparative statics of international trade models, both analytically and using specialized software (e.g. MATLAB). These analytical and computational tools are also highly portable to other parts of economics and statistical analysis. Students will be able to valuate and argument using a rigourous economic model and mathematical proofs. This theoretical knowledge is complemented by the ability to develop an empirical strategy to assess the impact of international trade on economic outcomes. They will further be able to engage with and critically discuss frontier research in international trade.

DETAILS
Regular problem sets allow students to apply the knowledge acquired during the lectures. These problem sets consist in theoretical and empirical exercises, which are to be solved either analytically or using a computer. They can be done in groups, and count towards the final grade.

ATTENDING AND NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS
The assessment for this course is based on problem sets and a final exam.
1. Problem sets can be completed in groups of up to three students, and count for 30% of the final grade, if and only if the problem set grade is higher than the final exam grade. Hence, submitting the problem sets is optional.
2. A group project and presentation of up to three students counts for 30% of the final grade, if and only if the grade is higher than the final exam grade. Hence, participating in a group project and doing a presentation is optional.
3. The final exam counts for 40%, 70% or a 100% of the final grade, depending on whether the grade in the final exam is higher or lower than the grade of the presentation and/or the problem set.
In the problem sets students will solve the workhouse models of international trade and analyze their main properties analytically computationally. They will also critically evaluate empirical strategies used to identify the causal effects of international trade and economic outcomes.
In the group projects and presentations, they will engage with the frontier research in international trade and develop their own research ideas and implement them.
In the final exams, student will analyze the main properties and comparative statics of frontier models and asked to display a good understanding of the frontier research in international trade.
