In order to feel comfortable with this course, it is recommended that students are already familiar with the fundamentals of Private Law and Public Law.

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the history of law in Europe. The purpose is to sketch the history of a common civilisation, to which contributed people coming from different and faraway lands, cities, kingdoms and towns. A special focus is on the sources of law: legislation, legal doctrine, and legal practice. The relevance of each of these sources varied over time. In order to shed light on the common features throughout the history of Europe, the course focuses on a selection of the institutions of private and public law which are most representative of each epoch and each country. A special emphasis is on the correlation between the laws and the role played by professional jurists. All topics in the course are dealt with particular attention to the exchange of normative bodies, legislations, doctrines, judicial decisions, and customs within Europe, included English Common Law. Overall, the course aims to introduce students to the complexities of European legal history through in-depth analysis of the sources of the law, from the middle ages to the present time.

The course will examine:

• Legal sources from Late Antiquity to Early Middle Ages 
• The Age of the Classical Ius Commune
• The Early Modern Period: legal doctrine, courts, and the sources of the law
• The Age of Reforms: the Enlightenment and the Law
• Legal Issues of the Contemporary Age

At the end of the course student will be able to...

- Describe the framework of the historical evolution of the law in Europe

- Recognize the different sources of the law from the middle ages to present time

- Illustrate the historical evolution of the fundamental legal principles of private and public law

At the end of the course student will be able to...

- Assess the historical evolution of the European legal systems

- Evaluate the sources of the law in time and space

- Develop a general understanding of the complexities of European legal history
