Biographical note

Stefania is Assistant Professor in the History of Art at Bocconi. Her main research and teaching expertise lies in the areas of Medieval and Byzantine art. 

Academic CV

Stefania obtained her first degree in cultural management (CLEACC) from Bocconi. She then moved to The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where she received her MA (2006) and PhD (2011), writing about the appropriation of Byzantine art in Siena and Venice in the fourteenth century.

Prior to joining the faculty at Bocconi, Stefania held the positions of Research Fellow at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut  and at IMT Lucca (2010–2012); Lecturer in the History of Byzantine Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art (2012–2014); and Assistant Director at The British School at Rome (2014–2015).

Research areas

Stefania’s current work focuses on the following areas:

  • The nexus between arts and politics in the medieval Mediterranean, with specific focus on artistic interactions, political conflict, and public memory. She is currently exploring these issues in relation to Genoa, Venice and the Eastern Mediterranean in the fourteenth century.
  • Conceptualizations and artistic applications of light and transparency, with a particular focus on the use and meaning of rock crystal. 
  • Materiality, liminality and presence in medieval and Byzantine art.
