2.3.1.1. Qualifying goals

The Master of Science in International Management has the following educational objectives:

  1. provide advanced preparation in the main business areas focusing on the international context: business management, marketing, corporate finance, labor management, operations and supply chain;
  2. develop a complete overview of the problems linked to the operative, strategic management of companies operating on a global scale, keeping in mind the peculiarities of an international and often multicultural context;
  3. complete your preparation in the business field providing competences in subjects as economics, quantitative and juridical, so as to develop problem analysis skills in interdisciplinary areas;
  4. develop behavioral skills via ad hoc seminars and via in / out of class activities related to courses, namely skills in communication, in interaction, in addressing complex issues; promote fluency in English to work effectively and efficiently; proficiency in a second EU language (Italian for non-Italian native speakers).
  5. Finally, to foster a wide-ranging culture to develop critical thinking and to delve into cutting-edge topics.

The main career opportunities for International Management graduates are described below.
 

Management expert in an international company

Role in the workplace:
Graduates support management activities within one of the organizational units (planning, marketing, operations, human resources) in companies working in global markets and multicultural contexts, with the aim of implementing company strategies. These activities include, for instance, helping to identify international markets in which to operate and the related products, implementing development strategies on a global scale, implementing supply chain and operational systems in international settings, monitoring and comparing economic-financial performances of the various branches and implementing policies for developing human resources with multicultural profiles.

Skills associated to the role:
Graduates possess qualified knowledge and advanced skills that allow them to have an overview of the main dynamics characterizing companies working in a global context (in particular, planning, marketing, operations management and human resources management skills, etc.). They are therefore able to contribute to the development of strategic plans, marketing plans, operational flows and procurement models, instruments for the recruitment and development of human resources, for both internal consistency (among organizational units) and external consistency (regarding specific features of the global markets in which it operates). Graduates can also assess performances in light of the strategies defined using advanced empirical methods and theoretical models.
Lastly, they can also interact and adapt to situations characterized by diversity of both a cultural nature and of cognitive models.

Career opportunities:
Graduates will work in medium and large multinational companies with a strong focus on international markets and international organizations.

Consultant for international companies

Role in the workplace:
Graduates analyze the specific features of companies and the competitive processes of international markets. Based on these analyses, graduates contribute to supporting companies in defining competitive international strategies in line with the characteristics of the companies they offer services to. As an example, they may support companies in various sectors in analyzing the competitive dynamics of the market of reference, clientele segmentation and analyzing competition.

Skills associated to the role:
Graduates possess qualified knowledge and advanced skills for dealing with strategic problems and the unique features characterizing international markets and multicultural contexts. They possess the ability to analyze and understand industry- and culture-specific features of the companies they support. They also possess advanced quantitative knowledge and abilities of both theoretical methods and empirical methods and can apply them in strategic analyses aimed at supporting the decisions of the company it offers its services to.

Career opportunities:
Graduates will work in: international consultancy firms or companies specialized in global markets, strategic consultancy firms, organizational consultancy firms, consultancy firms in finance and accounting.

2.3.1.3. Description of the educational path

The Master of Science in International Management is taught in English.


The first part of the study plan includes mandatory courses as well as seminars to develop behavioral skills.

The second part of the study plan includes educational activities to be chosen by the students focusing on specific subject areas. It is possible to draw from the Bocconi curriculum as well as that of other universities (mostly foreign).

There are also seminars and other educational activities aimed at fostering a wide-ranging culture.

The program structure includes other mandatory educational activities:

  • a 3-month work experience (internship or similar activity);
  • two EU languages:
    • English as a first language for all students; the second language must be different from their native language (Italian is mandatory for all students who are not native Italian speakers);
  • the thesis, which significantly characterizes the educational track.
     

Experience abroad, from one semester to one year, is encouraged (Exchange Programs, Free-Mover Semester Programs, Master CEMS-MIM, Double Degree Programs).

The courses subdivided in modules are considered passed, and may be recorded in the student academic career and certified, only after passing both exams of which it is made up. The final grade is obtained by the grade point average of the two marks compared to the credits and rounded up if decimals are equal or higher than 5, rounded down if they are lower than 5.

It is furthermore specified that the credit points and the grades earned for the individual modules passed will be taken into account for rankings within the University (e.g. Bocconi Scholarship, selection for International Programs, etc.) and they can be viewed by printing the unofficial academic transcript at Punto Blu.

Some opportunities to study abroad such as Exchange programs lasting one semester and Double Degree programs are offered (see "International Opportunities").

Bocconi students participating in the CEMS program must enter in their Bocconi study plan all compulsory and/or elective courses provided for in the program structure or as additional courses (maximum 3 courses).

2.3.1.5. Second year of studies

During the second year of studies students can freely draw their free track by choosing 3 elective courses which correspond to the 18 educational credit points referring to the educational activities chosen by the students; the allocation of electives is subject to the official approval of the MSc Program Director or his/her delegate to Academic Services.

2.3.1.6. International opportunities

Some opportunities to study abroad such as Exchange programs lasting one semester and Double Degree programs are offered.

Double Degree programs are addressed to a selected group of students who have excelled in their studies and have adequate language skills.

Students who are admitted can study one year in Italy and one year abroad; at the end of the courses they will obtain both the Italian Master of Science degree and the equivalent foreign degree awarded by the partner school.

Furthermore, those students who are selected on the basis of their academic performance can also obtain the CEMS-MIM (Master in International Management) awarded by the CEMS network, of which Bocconi is a member.

The Master in International Management MIM offered by CEMS (The Global Alliance in Management Education) is an additional opportunity to make an international experience during the second year of studies of the Master of Science program. The program lasts about one academic year and its curriculum combines academic knowledge with on-the-field experience.
