Course Objectives

The Language Center offers the following courses:
  • Bocconi exam preparation course
    • B2 level (degree program taught in Italian)
    • C1 level (degree program taught in Italian and in English)
  • international certificates preparation courses as an alternative to the exam
    • IELTS B2  (degree program taught in Italian)
    • IELTS C1  (degree program taught in Italian and in English)
    • BEC Vantage  (degree program taught in Italian)
    • BEC Higher  (degree program taught in Italian and in English)
B2 Level 

The aim of the course is to enable students to reach a confident B2 academic level which means he can:

  • actively participate in formal discussions on unfamiliar topics
  • be able to produce professional looking documents by developing arguments, providing motivation, synthesizing information
  • present in a consistent and detailed way, documents related to an academic environment

The course takes place at the 1st year. It is an annual course with one module.
The course takes into account the fact that the students are learning the language for eventual use in academic situations.


Course Content Summary

The course is divided into ten core topics. Around these topics students will practice and develop the appropriate skills expected at this level.

  • Brands and branding.
  • Organization.
  • Change.
  • Advertising.
  • Cultures.
  • Employment.
  • Ethics.
  • Leadership.
  • Innovation.
  • Competition.

There will be regular focus on key business functions in real academic/business contexts.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

  • Al I semestre del 1° anno, prima parte del corso con al termine prova intermedia, facoltativa, in modalità scritta.
  • Al II semestre del 1° anno, seconda parte del corso con al termine esame finale, obbligatorio, composto da prova scritta e prova orale.

In particolare

  • La prova scritta consiste in:
    - prova d’ascolto e relativi test di comprensione (30 punti)
    - comprensione di documenti scritti (40 punti)
    - produzione scritta (30 punti)
    - il voto è inizialmente espresso in centesimi e quindi convertito in trentesimi
  • L'accesso alla prova orale è subordinato al superamento della prova scritta con valutazione pari o superiore a 18/30.
  • Durante l’esame orale gli studenti devono saper riassumere e discutere 3 articoli a scelta di un minimo di 1350 parole su argomenti previsti nel programma d’aula.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods    

  • At the end of the 1st semester of the first year, students have the option of taking a written mid-term exam. This is not obligatory.
  • At the end of the 2nd semester of the first year, there is a final exam, mandatory, which consists of a written paper and an oral exam.

Especially:

  • The written paper consists of
    - Listening comprhension and related tests (30 marks)
    - Reading Comprehension (40 marks)
    - Writing (30 marks)
    - The mark is initially expressed in hundredths and then converted into thirty
  • Access to the oral exam is only possible once a student has passed the written exam (18/30).
  • In the oral exam students must show the ability to summarize and discuss 3 articles (of their own choice) of a minimum 1350 words on topics related to the syllabus.

Both mid-term and final year exam syllabuses are the same for attending and not attending students. Limited validity for all tests. For details, refer to the Course syllabus and examinations on www.unibocconi.eu/languagecenter

C1 Level

The course aims to develop the student's skills to a C1 academic level which means he can:

  • Understand a wide range of long, complex texts and recognize the implicit meaning
  • Fluent and natural production of the language
  • Use the language in a flexible and effective way
  • Use the language in social and cultural contexts
  • Use a wide variety of vocabulary and expressions for a variety of communication tasks
  • Produce clear, well-constructed and detailed texts on complex subjects, demonstrating good use of textual structures such as connectors and linking words

The course takes place over one academic year at the 1st year.

Preparation course for
IELTS Academic B2
International Language Testing System

The aim of the course is to give the student the necessary tools and skills to pass an IELTS certificate at grade 5.5 or higher. The student should then be able to:

  • Follow speech at some length on a variety of both concrete and abstract subjects
  • Produce a clear and detailed text on a range of subjects, expressing an opinion and discussing the pros and cons of different points of view
  • Express himself clearly and in detail on subjects related to his studies and to university life in general
  • Discuss the pros and cons of a pre-specified and relatively familiar subject
  • Speak at length (given a short time to prepare) on a question, without noticeable hesitation
  • Interact with a certain degree of fluency and spontaneity

Course Content Summary

Activities are aimed at developing skills which are required to confront with ease the various activities found in the IELTS test, in order to achieve a mark at a B2 level.
Particular attention is given to reinforcing each of the four linguistic skills tested in IELTS: listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Special emphasis is given to:

  • drafting, writing and revising full length essays;
  • written interpretation of graphical information;
  • detailed description of processes and procedures.

Then the listening activities are presented in order that the students are able to gauge the difficulty and complexity of the task.
Speaking activities are mainly concerned with developing interactive (discussions, debates) and reporting/presenting skills at thecompetence level B2.
In addition, the activities are based on simulations that are taken from past papers and appropriately selected materials.

Preparation course for
Business English Certificate Vantage
University of Cambridge ESOL

The course is designed for students who already have a B2 general proficiency level. In terms of linguistic competence, the final objective corresponds to that established by the Council of Europe for level B2 business. The objectives for the students can be summarized in the following way:

  • can deal confidently with different types of text, such as business publications and correspondence
  • can produce different pieces of writing, such as letters, reports, proposals and email
  • can follow and understand a range of spoken materials, such as interviews, discussions and presentations
  • can communicate effectively in face-to-face situations

The course takes into account the fact that the students are preparing solely for the Cambridge external certification Business English Certificate Vantage (B2 Business).


Course Content Summary

In the classroom, instruction focuses on preparing the students to take and pass the Cambridge English: BEC Vantage. Students will be introduced to the format of the certification, and all four sections of the certification will be practiced. The course is designed for students who already have a strong B2 proficiency level. In terms of linguistic competence, the final objective corresponds to that established by the Council of Europe for level C1 developed within the context of Business English (financial and economic terminology). Student objectives can be summarized as follows:

  • can deal confidently with different types of text;
  • can write a variety of different items such as memos, faxes, emails, reports and proposals;
  • can follow and understand a range of spoken materials such as conversations, interviews and discussions;
  • can communicate effectively in face-to-face situations.

The preparation course is aimed to the relevant external certification, which takes place at the authorized exam centers.
The certification can be converted as an alternative to the English exam.

Prerequisites

The course is aimed at those students enrolled in a three years bachelor program who already have a sound level of knowledge of the language, established by a specific placement test. The course is for a limited number of applicants.
Terms and enrollment procedures will be communicated via the student’s diary yoU@B at the beginning of each semester.
Please note that the course is run only if a minimum number of enrollments is reached.
