Course Objectives
Nowadays, relations between Businesses and Governments are becoming more and more relevant and also complex. Many economic sectors are influenced by the Government, at different institutional levels.
Business Government relations can be a massive source of competitive advantage if they are deeply known and strategically managed. Therefore, more and more businesses are integrating the so called non-market strategy (related to the dynamics with non-market forces, such as the Government) within the traditional corporate strategy and relations with Governments are no more isolated within the Public Affair offices.
The course is designed to help students to develop a general understanding of the main forms of Relations between Businesses and Governments. More specifically, students understand the great role that Governments can play in business environment as regulator (at macro and micro level), and therefore the different lobbying models, and as customer (notably, public purchases range between 15% and 20% of a Country’s GDP). Furthermore, the course explains the different forms of Public Private Partnerships used across jurisdictions and the role of high-net-worth individuals and corporate citizenship programs to pursue the public interest.
Lessons are run with a dynamic, case based approach; some short cases are also discussed in class in order to challenge students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate and take advantage of business government relations.

Course Content Summary

These are the main topics of the course:

  • Analysis of the different forms of Business Government Relations, from a global comparative perspective.
  • The influence of Government on businesses’ macro and micro economic environment (factors that influence a Country’s and a business’s competitiveness)
  • Corporate Lobbying approaches.
  • Public Procurement rules and practices; strategies a successful project proposal and to win within public tenders.
  • Public Private Partnerships: for infrastructure and businesses financing and development.
  • Corporate Citizenship, CSR, Impact Investing.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods
For Attending students:
  • Two Assignment to be run in small groups (weight: up to 60%).
  • Written exam (weight: 40%).
There is no partial for this course.

For Non attending students:

Written exam.

The text of the exam will be different for attending and non-attending students.
For attending students it will be more focused on the content of the lessons, on the cases discussed and on the class-notes + slides. Clearly, readings will help understanding the subject more in depth.
Questions for non-attending students will be referred to the learning materials (all readings + cases but not slides and class-notes).
