Course Objectives

The course provides the students with an introduction to the discipline of sociology. The first part of the course focuses on issues of population, social structure and culture and their relation to social organization.Specific topics covered include family and kinship structures, work, organizations, and markets, and norms, laws, and social regulation.The second part of the course emphasizes sociological research of various aspects of social life including self and personality, marriage and family, urbanization, globalization, social mobility, education, and work, and health and mortality. Throughout the course, we draw upon two core themes.First, how have long-term trends in population shaped the nature of social organization and social life?Second, how does a life course perspective allow us to understand personal and social experience through the interconnections of historical context, human development, and agency?
