Course Objectives

The main purpose of this course is to complete the mathematical education acquired previously. New tools are provided, whose use is widespread both in Economics and in Management Science, such as integral and probability calculus. The second purpose of the course is to introduce financial calculus and its most relevant applications in practice. The first part of the course is relevant for future applications, while the second one has an immediate professional value.

Course Content Summary
  • Integral calculus: definite integral. Antiderivatives, indefinite integral.
  • Integration methods.
  • Improper integrals.
  • Various approaches to probability.
  • Random experiments, Events, Probability, Bayes' Theorem.
  • Random numbers, probability distribution and their moments.
  • Expected value and variance of a linear function of a random vector.
  • Accumulation and Discount processes.
  • Amortization, leasing and instalment sales.
  • Standard financial contracts.
  • Financial choices.
  • Term structure of interest rates and bond arithmetics.
  • Financial immunization.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written exam and an oral exam, both compulsory. Two alternative modalities are available:
  • One general written exam and an oral exam;
  • Four partial on line exams and an oral exam.

The general written exam lasts one hour and consists of answering to six questions. Every reply gives a maximum of two points. The students pass the general written exam if they correctly answer to at least two questions. Only the students that passed the written exam can do the oral exam in the same exam session. The oral exam consists of two questions asked by two different teachers. The first answer is evaluated with a mark ranging from 0 to 10, the second answer is assessed with a mark ranging from 0 to 9. The final mark is the sum of the points assigned in the general written exam with the points gathered in the oral exam. Marks larger than 30 imply honours.

During the course, the students have the opportunity to take four partial on line exams (1 hour each). Each partial exam enables the student to gather points. The total score will be converted in a total mark between 0 and 30. If this total mark is at least 15, the student has the right to take the oral exam only once, in any of the exam session scheduled by February 2017. The oral exam is compulsory and consists of one general question. The answer is evaluated with a mark ranging from 0 to 32. The final mark is the simple average of the total mark of the partial on line exams and the mark obtained in the oral exam, rounded up. Marks larger than 30 imply honours.

The oral exam session starts on the scheduled day and, if necessary, it continues on the following days. Every information will be available from the registration deadline on.

  • Calcolo integrale: integrale definito. Primitive, integrale indefinito.
  • Metodi di integrazione.
  • Integrali generalizzati.
