Mission e Programma sintetico / Mission & Content Summary
MISSION

The course aims at providing level B2 (post intermediate) legal (see CEFR framework) knowledge and skills required to pass the Bocconi internal exam (and beneficial for international English language certification). Fornire le conoscenze e competenze previste per il livello B2 (intermedio superiore) legal del quadro di riferimento europeo (CEFR) necessarie ai fini del superamento dell’esame interno Bocconi ed utili nel caso di sostenimento di certificazione internazionale.

PROGRAMMA SINTETICO / CONTENT SUMMARY

The duration of the course is one year (1st and 2nd semester of 2nd year).

 

The course is divided into the following core areas in order to acquire a B2 legal level (in terms of grammar, syntax and vocabulary) through contextualized “legal” situations:

 

A career in law, Contract law, Tort law, Criminal law, Company law, Commercial law, Real property law, Litigation and arbitration, International law, Comparative law.

L’insegnamento è annuale (primo + secondo semestre) del 2° anno .

 

Il programma affronta le seguenti macro-tematiche principali in modo da consentire di raggiungere il livello B2 legal (in termini di grammatica, sintassi e vocabolario) attraverso situazioni concrete e contestualizzate all’ambito “legal”:

Skills

Students will be able to interact in the legal environment in written and oral form with sufficient confidence and effectiveness (write documents and mails in a proper legal style, read and understand the meaning of legal documents, make oral presentations with correct use of language and pronunciation; understand the point of view of other persons and actively participate during meetings).

Lo studente sarà in grado di interagire in forma scritta ed orale con sufficiente disinvoltura ed efficacia in un contesto lavorativo che richiede conoscenze giuridiche (produrre corrispondenza usando il registro giuridico, leggere e comprendere il significato di base di documentazione giuridica, presentare relazioni con linguaggio e pronuncia appropriati e corretti, comprendere la posizione assunta dai vari interlocutori e partecipare in modo sufficientemente attivo ai meeting di lavoro).

STUDENTI FREQUENTANTI E NON FREQUENTANTI / ATTENDING AND NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS

The assessment method consists of an exam focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking competencies in line with international certifications.

The mark is expressed out of 30.

Student can sit the exam (“general” mode) as from the end of second semester (after the end of the teaching period).

5 exam sessions are scheduled throughout the year (May-Jun, Jun-Jul, Aug-Sept, Oct, Jan-Feb).

The exam consists of two parts: written (focused on writing, reading, listening) and oral

Please note that:

  • to sit for the exam, it is required to register via Punto Blu (one single registration, valid for both written and oral part)
  • written and oral part have to be taken in the same exam session
  • the written part is the same for both attending and non attending students
  • final grade: result of the written part + result of the oral part
  • maximum result of the written part: 27
  • if the result of written part is ≥18, the student is required to sit the oral part (in the same exam round of the written part); withdrawal is not allowed after handing in the written paper as the oral part is just the final step of a single exam (the same as international certifications)
  • Students who hand in the written test will receive notification about their result, and details for paper view (via Agenda yoU@B) details about date, hour, room for the oral part will follow
  • result range for the oral part: min -1 - max +4
  • if the student is absent at the oral part of the same written session, or does not interact orally, they will receive -3

 

 

Written Part

 

The written exam consists of three parts. Each part is worth assigned a mark and the sum of these marks is converted into thirtieths to give the final grade.

 

Writing (30 marks), Listening (30 marks), Reading Comprehension (40 marks). Each part is assigned a mark and the sum of these marks is converted into thirtieths to give the grade of the written part. ( maximum grade awardable 27/30)

First part

Listening 30 marks

Objective

Checking understanding of a spoken passages and making accurate notes of the information contained

Skill

Listening to authentic materials, messages, announcements or radio broadcasts

Test

Sentence and/or table completion, true/false questions, multiple choice questions

Second part

                                                             Reading 40 marks

Objective

 knowledge of legal English vocabulary correct understanding of written material; the ability to rework the contents in a well structured manner and express personal opinions;

Skill

 Understanding one or more passages of a certain legal complexity

Test

Sentence and/or table completion, true/false questions, multiple choice answers, open/closed questions, producing appropriate sentences

Third part

Writing 30 marks

Objective

 Checking the ability to express a point of view in a clear and  appropriate manner

Skill

Writing authentic legal styled documents

Test

Writing memos, letters or short legal reports following the instructions provided.

Oral part  

 

 

Objective

Explain and discuss the subject of the topic chosen, answering examiner's and partner's questions

Test

Students are required to prepare a  powerpoint presentation ( max 6 slides) which theyl present to a fellow student  and the examiner. As it will be done in pairs, students present to each other in turns.The topic chosen has to be one which has been covered during the course.

A top band B2 (post intermediate) general (or higher) entry level is recommended for active participation in learning activities. A top band B2 means a 25 written mark, as a minimum, in the CLMG 50127 1st year exam.

MISSION

The course aims at providing level C1 (advanced) legal (see CEFR framework) knowledge and skills required to pass the Bocconi internal exam and/or IELTS Academic. Fornire le conoscenze e competenze previste per il livello C1 (avanzato) legal del quadro di riferimento europeo (CEFR) necessarie ai fini sia del superamento dell’esame interno Bocconi sia, eventualmente, del sostenimento del test internazionale IELTS Academic.

PROGRAMMA SINTETICO / CONTENT SUMMARY

The duration of the course is one year 1st and 2nd semester of 2nd year.

      

Teaching activities:

 the course is divided  into 12 modules focusing on different skills and a wide range of topic areas.

“skills” activities: each module contains various activities, including writing exercises, reading and comprehension, listening passages and speaking exercises.  Attention will be focused on practicing exercises as contained in the final exam.

On Blackboard students will be able to find the material provided by the teacher in the classroom along with additional study materials.

Modules:

·       Module 1 - Introduction to the CLMG C1 course and discussion on what will be expected of students during the course. What are the expectations of both students and Professors? Overview and outline of the course. A short grammar analysis will done to determine grammatical knowledge and awareness.

 

·       Module 2 - Communication: the importance of communicating well. What makes a good/bad communicator? Listening practice on the subject area. Reading to develop arguments and how we can develop our vocabulary.

 

·       Module 3 - Career in law in the EEC and in Italy: listening practice, writing practice, oral practice based round this area. Business lawyers. Barristers, solicitors and their roles. The ways for lawyers to become qualified to practise. Reading practice and vocabulary extension.

 

·       Module 4 - Patents and Intellectual property: What are patents and what is IP? Current articles on the topic area will be read. Vocabulary tasks will be set and practise. Metaphors and their use in a legal context will be studied. Report writing conventions introduced.

 

·       Module 5 - Teambuilding: students will participate in a variety of teambuilding exercises to enable them to assess the advantages of working in teams. Students assess what makes teams work who becomes the leader and the various roles played within a team.  Discursive writing practice. Listening practice.

 

·       Module 6 Critical thinking: the important role this plays in the legal field. Students will participate in activities and then assess the outcomes. Writing, listening and oral skills will developed.

 

·       Module 7 Competition law and Organised Crime: look at current situation regarding tariffs and the EU purpose of unrestricted tariff barriers. Articles on the module area will be read, vocabulary regarding competition will be studied. Introduction to letter writing and conventions. Listening practice.

 

 

·       Module 8 Employment law and the Role of Mediation. Introduction to the basic elements of EL. Reading case studies. Writing up the facts surrounding the outcomes. Letter writing practice. Discussion techniques.

 

·       Module 9 - Cybercrime and Cyberspace fraud and Risk Management Reading practice on the subjects. Understanding definitions and expressions. Report writing practice. Listening practice on the subject area.

 

·       Module 10 - Management and leadership styles: students will look at the various styles while analysing the advantages and disadvantages of each. Listening practice. Summary writing.

 

·       Module 11 - Human Rights law: the importance of HRL in the present day. Listening and note taking practice. Reading practice with vocabulary extension. Debating skills.

 

·       Module 12 - Exam practice. Preparation and techniques.
