Mission & Content Summary

MISSION

The course Contemporary Art Markets and Systems, Global Economics, ideally follows on from Contemporary Art Markets and Systems, Foundations, which laid the basis for a thorough understanding of the key elements of the functioning of the art world and presented an exploration of the relationship and coexistence of cultural and economic features in the art system. The course aims to provide an advanced understanding of the current challenges in the art system operating on a global scale, focusing on the unravelling of market and commercial dynamics and their influence on key actors such as commercial galleries and art fairs. In parallel, the course will also offer a seminar-based session aimed at exposing students to contemporary global debates on art criticism and curatorial issues.

CONTENT SUMMARY

The course will provide an advanced insight into the workings of the contemporary art market.

The course:

  • Explores the strategic and managerial issues raised by recent developments in the roles and weight of commercial players and emerging global trends.
  • Presents how contemporary artistic practices represents and reflect on economic processes in the contemporary art system within the global economic scenario.

  • Understand the managerial challenges for the growth of market institutions in the global art field.
  • Know the main commercial strategies and entrepreneurial projects implemented by market actors in the global arts sector.
  • Comprehend contemporary global debates on art criticism and curatorial issues
  • Comprehend how artistic practices have represented or reflected upon crucial issues related to the global economic scenario.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

At the end of the course student will be able to...
  • Know how to develop and present an individual project for the strategic development of an art market institution.
  • Identify the main lines of reflection of artists on crucial issues related to the global economic scenario and assess how artistic knowledge can provide a commentary on social issues.
  • Master the vocabulary and language of commercial actors and acquire the ability to shift frames by also being able to interact and engage with artistic practices.

ATTENDING STUDENTS

Attending students

 

The evaluation will consist of:

  • Group assignment.

The assignment will be articulated during the course and will deal with emerging global economics trend in the Art Market. It will test student capacity to analyze current scenario and present an innovative project.

  • Personal assignment.

A personal assignement will be conducted on artistic representation of economic processes. It will test student's ability to critically apply the concepts and skills acquired during the course.

  • Final work

Will test test students' comprehension and understanding of the issues and concepts discussed in lectures and class activities


NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS

Non-attending students are evaluated trough a written exam (2 open questions out of 3).

The exam will test non attending student’s learning of the theories, concepts and methods illustrated in the bibliographic material and their correct understanding.

The exam will count 100% of the final evaluation.
