Basic knowledge of Organizational Behavior
Global Leadership aims at supporting students in gaining a deeper understanding of leadership as a key organizational processes that involves the leader, his/her followers and the context in which it is enacted for the achievement of high value added results through the enhancement of the engagement of everyone involved and effective teamwork. Moreover, the course aims at supporting the development of the competences that are mostly needed to have a positive impact on one’s personal and team performance in a global environment. The globalization of businesses and the urgent call for sustainability pose both the challenge of leading effectively in cross-cultural environments and of doing so in a responsible way, making complex and high-impact decisions with integrity, a systemic outlook and foresight. Overall the course wants to be a valuable resource for finding one’s own way to leadership enhancing personal impact through the empowerment of self and others within one’s team. Following up with the overall aim of the CEMS Community of promoting global and responsible citizenship, all activities will be carried out with particular emphasis placed upon the following values: -the pursuit of excellence with high standards of performance and ethical conduct -understanding and drawing upon cultural diversity with respect and empathy -professional responsibility and accountability in relation to society as a whole” (Cems mission statement - https://www.cems.org
Coherently with the overall mission of the course, Global Leadership addresses the concepts and competences that are mostly critical to operate effectively as a leader in a global environment, within virtual and cross-cultural teams with integrity and a focus on sustainability. The perspective is that of the global people leader who sets the stage for the achievement of stronger employee performance and improved business results by enhancing employee engagement. Students are given the opportunity to gain valuable insights to create a framework of effective and sustainable leadership practices based upon the creation of mutual trust and respect and on the empowerment of people in a global setting . The goal of the course is to support the development of both knowledge and competence to have an impact for enhanced performance and learning. The former to enable a thorough and deeper understanding of emerging leadership issues and to “make sense” beyond “common sense” of the emergent leadership dynamics. The latter, to make a difference in acting as a responsible and inclusive leader by finding one’s own way to leadership and through the enhancement of personal impact for high value added and sustainable decision making.
The course unfolds on three interdependent modules: (1) growing as a leader: the role of self and role/organizational awareness and of learning through experience, (2) leading self for high impact and (3) leading others for optimal team performance and growth.
Two are the main assumptions on which the course has been designed:
-the first, leaders who focus on bringing out the best in themselves and in people in the context in which they operate, can transform the way their organizations functions achieving great results in a sustainable way;
-the second one, leadership competencies are built upon self-awareness and self-leadership abilities. This is the reason why participants are provided with opportunities to reflect on themselves and on their interpersonal styles both through self-assessment, class discussions and peer coaching session.

Have a thorough understanding of global leadership as a process and of the individual and interpesonal skills for enhanced effectiveness
Be more self-aware with reference to motives, values and the personal strengths that might enhance one’s leadership
Practice learning from experience for leadership development
- Choose the most appropriate leadership style given the situation
- Manage oneself for optimal individual performance (coping with stress, emotional agility, cognitive and learning styles)
- Manage interpersonal relationships assertively and constructively
- Enable empowerment and engagement within interpersonal relationships
- Build credibility and trust in interpersonal settings.
- Craft high impact communication styles (one on one and one to many)
- Develop sensitivity to different cultures.
- Master the challenges associated with teamwork in global and virtual settings

The course has been designed to enable concepts' exploration and learning from experience given that leadership development entails integrating new concepts for a better understanding of leadership challenges and enlarging one's behavioral repertoire for enhanced leadership effectiveness.
Opportunities are created and offered to students during the sessions for learning through action, observation and reflection. Individually and cooperatively.
- Self-assessment tools will be used to enable increased self-awareness.
- Exercises are proposed as opportunities for individual reflection and action on leadership competences
- The group assignment is an opportunity to learn about leadership within the global small team through the activation of the Action-Observation-Reflection cycle
- Guest speakers' talks are meant to provide insights on how leadership "works" within organizational contexts and to enable meeting with relevant role models
- Small Group Assignment (40%): it represents a fundamental component of the learning process according to the mission and goals of the course. The small group assignment is in fact an opportunity to deepen the understanding of one of the most up to date emerging issues in leadership and to practice one’s leadership skills within a team that is by nature global. The rigour and appropriate application of tools and concepts discussed during the course will be evaluated together with the overall effectiveness of the presentation of the main concepts and implication.
- Written exam: multiple choice on bibliographical material and topics discussed in class (30%)
- Peer coaching report on Individual Action Plan for leadership development (30%)
Global Leadership is a mandatory course for CEMS students. The status of non attending student must be related to a demonstrated inability to attend to be discussed with the Professor responsabile for the course.
The non attending exam will be oral or written depending upon the number of non attending students and it will consist of multiple choice and/or open ended questions meant to verify the acquisition and the ability to effectively represent and discuss the main concepts about leading in global environment described in the book (see Teaching Materials)
