Mission & Content Summary
MISSION

The course aims to prepare the student to the PPA Master Program. We’ll cover the basic concepts in the study of political phenomena. We will learn about the differences between political regimes, power structures and electoral systems, paying attention to both the variations within and between democracies and autocracies. In addition, the course gives an introduction to the topic of International Relations. We will cover the main theories on state interaction and their historical development. Then, we will try to apply the different frameworks we have seen to current events.

CONTENT SUMMARY

Structure:

- Part 1 Basic concepts in the study of Political Science. In this part of the course we will learn about the different fields of study within Political Science, their research areas and methodologies. Then, we will learn about power structures, regime types, electoral systems and the strategic interactions of actors within countries.

- Part 2 International Relations

In this module, we will learn about the many theories of International Relations and how they have developed through time. Particular attention will be devoted to the rationalist explanations for war and their application to issues such war, civil conflict and decision making in IOs.

- Part 3 Research by the Bocconi faculty

In this final model we will take a look at the research that Bocconi Professors have published in the field of Political Science and International Relations, what are their specific research interests and how they have impacted the scholarly debate.
