Mission & Content Summary
MISSION

The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of statistics and data analysis necessary to face the compulsory courses of Quantitative Methods, present in the Master M, IM, MM, GIO, PPA.

CONTENT SUMMARY
  • Introduction to data sources, database, sampling.
  • Description of qualitative data: classification of variables, univariate and bivariate analysis, graphical  representations.
  • Description of quantitative data: summary measures, outliers detection, bivariate analysis, scatter plots.
  • Probability and random variables(brief notes): standard distributions
  • Introduction to inferential statistics: point and interval estimation, introduction to esting theory
  • Test for bivariate analysis: test of indipendence, test on the difference of means.
  • Simple regression and test on the coefficients.

  • Understand the difference between the tools of descriptive and inferential statistics, and identify the most suitable approach for the problem at hand.

  • Properly summarize a dataset.
  • Estimate and test hypotheses on the unknown parameters of a population based on sample data.

    Mission e Programma sintetico
    MISSION

    Il corso ha lo scopo di fornire agli studenti le conoscenze di base di statistica e di analisi dei dati necessarie per affrontare i corsi obbligatori di Metodi Quantitativi, presenti nei bienni M e MM.

    PROGRAMMA SINTETICO

     

    • Nozioni introduttive: fonti dei dati, database, campionamento.
    • Descrizione di dati qualitativi: classificazione delle variabili, analisi univariata e bivariata, rappresentazioni grafiche.
    • Descrizione di dati quantitativi: misure di tendenza centrale e non centrale, individuazione dei dati anomali, analisi bivariata, rappresentazioni grafiche.
    • Variabili aleatorie (cenni): probabilità, variabili aleatorie, distribuzioni notevoli.
    • Introduzione all’inferenza statistica: stima puntuale e per intervallo, introduzione alla teoria dei test.
    • Test per analisi bivariate: analisi di connessione, test sul confronto fra medie, test sul coefficiente di correlazione
    • Regressione lineare semplice e test sui coefficienti.

    • Sintetizzare in modo appropriato un insieme di dati.

    • Costruire semplici modelli statistici, quali quelli di regressione, volti a studiare le relazioni fra le diverse variabili di interesse.

    Mission & Content Summary
    MISSION

    The course introduces basic concepts from inferential statistics. The course has two types of audiences: 1. Students who want to review concepts encountered before but who value having them refreshed and ready more than the time required to attend the prep-course in August. 2. Students who self-assess that they may presenting “gaps” in their background with reference to one or more of the topics/lectures listed below.

    CONTENT SUMMARY

    1. Random sampling: 
    Sample statistics and their properties
    Location-scale family and their properties
    The case of unknown variance: t-Student distribution 

     

    2. Modes of convergence and point estimation: 
    Convergence in probability and weak law of large numbers
    Almost sure convergence and strong law of large numbers
    Convergence in distribution and the central limit theorem

     

    3. Theory of estimation:
    Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE)
    Evaluating estimators: MSE, UMVUE, Consistency

     

    4. Hints to the theory and approaches to hypothesis tests.

    MISSION

    Il corso introduce i concetti di base della statistica inferenziale. Il corso ha due tipi di pubblico: 1. Studenti che vogliono rivedere i concetti studiati in precedenza ma che apprezzano averli aggiornati e pronti attraverso la frequentazione del pre-corso ad agosto. 2. Studenti che percepiscono di poter soffrire di “lacune” nel loro background con riferimento ad uno o più degli argomenti/lezioni di seguito elencate.
