Biographical note

I am tenured professor of legal history at Bocconi University and vice president of the European Society for Comparative Legal History (The Hague).

I joined Bocconi in 2006. In January 2014 I was unanimously declared as full professor of legal history (ssd IUS 19, 12H2) by the Italian national scientific committee (ASN).

In 2022 I received the teaching award for innovation from Bocconi.

My studies span from the history of justice to the history of commercial law.

I authored five books and more than 80 scientific contributions (chapters, journal articles, and encyclopedic entries). I publish my works in English and in French with Cambridge University Press, Edinburgh University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Classiques Garnier (Paris), LGDJ Lextenso (Paris), Peter Lang, Springer, Brill, Klostermann (Frankfurt am M.).

I am member of the scientific board of primary legal journals such as Comparative Legal History, Clio@Themis, Revue historique de droit français et étranger, Annali di storia delle università italiane, and Rechtskultur.

I am research associate of the Instituto Figuerola de Historia y Ciencias Sociales, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and of the Instituto de Derecho Comparado, Academia Nacional de Derecho y Ciencias Sociales de Córdoba (Argentina).

I have held sponsored visiting positions, among others, at Boalt Hall (Berkeley), the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, Toulouse 1 Capitole, and at the University of Bordeaux.

I lectured and gave talks at several institutions and universities, such as the universities of Augsburg, Bergen, Autónoma de Madrid, Madrid Carlos III, Helsinki, Turku, Utrecht, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Ghent, Wien, Lille, Limoges, Strasbourg, Aix-Marseille, at the Ecole française de Rome, and at the Ecole des hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris).

Research interests

My research interests include the history of justice, the history of commercial law, the history of criminal law and procedure, the history of legal thought, legal education, and the circulation of legal knowledge.

My most recent works on networks (of jurists) offer innovative perspectives driven from cross contamination of legal history, social history, network analysis, and intellectual history.

Thanks to my international expertise in legal research, in 2020 I have been appointed external referee by the rector of Charles University, Prague, for the evaluation of the research carried out by the members of the legal Department.

In 2022, the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation of the Flemish government, Brussels, appointed me member of the Panel of international experts for the evaluation of the Flemish Academic Bibliographic Database for Social Sciences and Humanities.
