PhD in Probabilistic Risk Assessment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (MA), USA, under the supervision of Prof. George E. Apostolakis. He has also attained advanced specialization courses at Harvard University and at MIT Sloan School of Management. He holds an MSc in Nuclear Engineering with specialization in Mathematics and Physics from the Politecnico di Milano.
Full Professor at the Department of Decision Sciences and Director of the Bachelor in Economics, Management and Computer Science (BEMACS).
He has been director of the ELEUSI Research Centre of Bocconi University from 2008 to 2012.
He is the current president Elect of the Decision Analysis Society of INFORMS.
He is Co-Chairman of the Technical Committee on Uncertainty Analysis of the European Safety and Reliability Association since 2013.
He is Co-Editor-In-Chief of the European Journal of Operational Research, Scientific Advisor of the Springer International Series in Operations Research and Management Science and member of the Scientific Committee of the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation.
He has won several national and international awards, among which the 2017 "Chinese Academy of Sciences President's Visiting Professor Fellowship", the 2015 IBM Faculty Award, the 2014 Best Risk Analysis Paper Award, the 2013 Best Referee Award of Risk Analysis, the 2013 Best Reviewer Award of Reliability Engineering and System Safety, the 2012 and 2010 best reviewer award of the European Journal of Operational Research and the 2012 Best Reviewer Award of Environmental Modelling and Software, the Research Excellency Award of Bocconi University for nine consecutive years, 2006-2014, the McCormack Fellowship of the Westinghouse Corporation (in 2000) awarded to the best Ph.D. Candidate of the Nuclear Engineering Department of MIT, the honorary memberhip of "Sigma XI, the Scientific Research Society of North America" and of "Alpha Nu Sigma, the Honorary Society of the American Nuclear Society," of which he was the president of its MIT Section.
He is author of several new sensitivity analysis methods, among which the Differential Importance Measure (DIM). DIM has been presented at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2000 and, since 2002, is included in the "Probabilistic Risk Assessment Procedures Guide of NASA Managers and Practitioners".
He has been Guest Lecturer and invited speaker in conferences and workshops in several national and international universities. He has participated in and conducted several national and international research projects in cooperation with Idaho National Laboratories, il Joint Research Center dell’European Commission, Électricité de France, Fitch Ratings SpA , SAS Institute, Fidia Farmaceutici SpA, Siemens, Grandi Stazioni, Charles Rivers Analytics e la US Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).
He is member of the Editorial Board of several international journal, among which Risk Analysis, Reliability Engineering and System Safety, Journal of Risk and Reliability, International Journal of Mathematics in Operational Research, International Journal of Risk Management, International Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Service and Computing Oriented Manufacturing and Economia&Management. He cooperates as referee with numerous international journals.
He is the author of more than 100 publications. His works have appeared in scientific journals such as Journal of the Royal Statistical Society series B, Management Science, Operations Research, Nature Climate Change, European Journal of Operational Research, Risk Analysis, Water Resources Research, SIAM-ASA Journal on Uncertainty Quantification, Reliability Engineering & System Safety, International Journal of Production Economics, etc..
