GUIDES TO THE UNIVERSITY

Bocconi University's School of Law offers, a five-year Integrated Master of Arts in Giurisprudenza [Law] (CLMG) program.
The CLMG program is taught in two class groups made up of an average of 140 students each.

The study plan is expressed with credit points.
A credit point is the unit of measurement which determines the workload students are required to fulfil. It is assumed that students are adequately prepared from the start to carry out the educational activities required by the degree program. The workload includes both classroom activities (lectures, exercises, seminars) as well as group work and individual study.

Credit points are given for all educational activities which are part of the program requirements.

In accordance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), on average one credit point is equivalent to 25 hours of work, about 8 of which are spent in the classroom.

The average workload for a full-time student is set at 60 credit points per year, as per agreement.

In order to receive the Integrated Master of Arts in Law degree, students must earn at least 300 credit points.

The credit points assigned to each educational activity are earned when students pass an exam or its equivalent.

• the first part of the educational path provides the juridical 'method' and the cultural and technical basis to train the jurist working primarily in a company;
• the second part of the educational path provides advanced studies to complete jurist's cultural training, via monograph studies of specific institutions or subject areas which have been studied in the 'basic courses';
• promote the development of juridical competences in a European and international perspective not only via mandatory basic courses of comparative and international law, but also via optional courses, some of which taught in English and via student international mobility with study periods in partner universities;
• complete the juridical education with basic economics, business and quantitative studies for easy access in the economic cultural context in which the modern jurist will work;
• assure the cognitive instruments necessary to make and draft complex juridical thoughts leading to correct solutions to problems requiring a specialized knowledge with particular reference to topics of the jurist in companies or public and international institutions;
• develop competence and knowledge through educational activities involving the active student participation in class and interaction with the professor through earning on-the field skills through internship and case studies;
• develop skills to use the IT skills, English language and a second EU language in juridical context.

• have access to such legal professions as: the magistracy, notary public, legal profession, subject to a state competitive examination (magistracy or notary) or specific examination (legal profession) as well as (in the case of the legal profession and notary) a period of apprenticeship in a professional studio according to regulations;
• have access to the regulated professions. In such cases, the graduate can enroll in the postgraduate school for the legal professions, whose aim is to prepare students for the law examination and the state competitive examination for notary or magistrate; enrolling in the School exempts from the national pre-selection for the magistracy competitive examination;
• have access to the labor market in companies, public bodies, non-profit institutions, in international and supranational organizations in positions where specific juridical preparation is required;
• continue their studies by enrolling in a PhD. program in legal subjects.

The courses subdivided in modules are considered passed, and may be recorded in the student academic career and certified, only after passing both exams of which it is made up. The final grade is obtained by the grade point average of the two marks compared to the credits of each module and rounded up if decimals are equal or higher than 5, rounded down if they are lower than 5.

It is furthermore specified that the credit points and the grades earned for the individual modules passed (even if the exam is not yet registered) will be taken into account for rankings within the University (e.g. Bocconi Scholarship, selection for International Programs, etc.) and they can be viewed by printing the unofficial academic transcript at Punto Blu.

Exam sequence and progress requirements
In order to guarantee that students acquire advanced knowledge, it is essential that they have a solid preparation. Prerequisites are therefore required for some courses. Exam sequence indicates the sequence that must be followed in preparing exams and requires students to pass some exams before sitting for others. Studying abroad:

According to an agreement with a network of Partner Universities (Themis), some students selected on merit may obtain an international diploma awarded by the 4 institutions which make up the network. Program procedures and participation information are included in "Studying abroad".

The program structure is made up of compulsory courses corresponding to exams which all students must pass. In order to reach the degree program's educational goals and receive the Integrated Master of Arts in Law degree, students must pass the exams related to these courses.

According to current regulations, such educational activities are classified as: "basic", "characteristic" of the degree's field of study and "independently decided upon by the University" (D.M. 25 November 2005).

Compulsory courses, whose credit points and subject areas meet ministerial requirements, are divided into two categories:

• basic compulsory courses, which are the same for all Integrated Master of Arts in Law program students;
• compulsory courses included in the second/third year, that can be chosen alternatively by the student;
• advanced compulsory courses (a.c. - advanced courses), positioned in the fourth and fifth years of studies, which expand on topics dealt with in the basic courses taken in the first years of the program. Each advanced course has a specialized profile related to each major.

Detailed programs (course syllabuses) are available online and they are usually distributed by professors on the first days of lectures.

Students must select elective courses in order to complete the program requirements regarding activities chosen by the student. An elective course is worth 6 credit points.

The detailed profiles of the courses (course syllabuses) are available online and in any case are usually distributed in class by the faculty when the course starts.
 

Before choosing their electives students should consult the table of "Incompatible courses". This table indicates the courses that cannot be chosen together in the same study plan because their course programs are either exactly or partly similar.

The exams related to electives can be taken at universities abroad as part of the programs offered by the International Relations Service. The criteria and credit approval procedure is indicated in "Credits for Exams Passed at Universities Abroad".

The program structure includes the choice of one of the following majors, at the beginning of the fourth year:

• Impresa [Business law track]: addressed to an in-depth study of the issues inherent in private enterprise law, with a focus on the rules governing companies, extraordinary financial operations, operations of financial markets, financial intermediation, as well as regulation of competition and industrial law;
  
• Forense [Litigation law track]: addressed to an in-depth study of topics specifically linked to court/out of court phases;
  
• International track: addressed to an in-depth study of topics specifically linked to international public law on the basic of graduates’ academic path prepared to access to national Public Institutions and International and supranational Institutions.

For each of the guided majors, students may choose their elective courses in a selection of courses.

In order to ensure the recognition of the exams taken abroad, students enrolled in the International track major who participated in international programs (exchange, free mover, Themis, summer program) can change the study plan after the international experience by entering the corresponding courses taught in Italian at Bocconi.

The program requirements of the Integrated Master of Arts in Law include a first and a second European language as compulsory subjects.

In order to classify levels of language knowledge, Bocconi University follows the Common European Framework established by the European Council.

Considering that language learning is a long and gradual process and that the exit levels of the program must be adequate for to post-study opportunities, the University:

• Requires the B1 level as an entry pre-requisite for English;
  
• Advises an initial A2 level for the second language.

In order to enable students to be properly prepared on entry, on the Bocconi website at www.unibocconi.eu/languagecenter in Minimum Level Required, the University:

• Specifies the grammatical and syntactic knowledge and communication skills relating to the minimum entry levels;
• Gives detailed specifications of learning materials which may be helpful to achieve such levels.

1. Those students who have more than one native tongue (e.g. because they come from countries/regions where more than one language is spoken or have parents of different nationalities) must declare one single native language for the whole duration of their studies.
2. As an alternative to the Legal English course to prepare for the Bocconi exam at the B2 level, starting with the 2017-2018 cohort, i.e. students enrolled in their second year of the program in the a.y. 2018-2019 may take a Legal English course which prepares students for not only the Bocconi exam at the C1 level but also IELTS C1.
3. Native English speakers MUST change their first language via Punto Blu immediately after finalization of enrollment (see chapter 9 Administrative Rules, Regulations and Deadlines) and choose from among: Italian, French, Spanish or German. Portuguese, Bocconi teaching and exam, is only offered as a second language for students enrolled in the third year of studies. For Portuguese as a first language it is only possible to record the result of one of the international certifications recognized by the University in the study plan. 4. For all students, including native English speakers, the first language for the second year must be Legal English.
5. Students can choose to enroll in the Legal English C1 course provided that they meet certain requirements (see chapter 2.2.4.1.).
6. For the Bocconi English exam in the 2nd year, students can choose between levels B2 and C1 levels regardless of the level of the course attended.
   

Course codes

For native English speakers, language codes are:

• Italian 50136, French 50135, Portuguese 50137, Spanish 50138, German 50139;
• for the first language in the second year: Legal English 50128;
• for the second language in the third year: Italian 50130, French 50129, Portuguese 50131, Spanish 50312, German 50133.

General information relating to certifications/tests (hereinafter "certifications").
Detailed information is available on the Bocconi website.
Students can record only one of the certifications recognized by the University, taken at one of the officially recognized Examination Centers, in Italy or abroad.

In addition, certifications must be:

• Of a level equal to or higher level than the minimum exit level required (see 2.2.2.).
• Recorded within 3 years after the date the exam was taken(except for TOEFL which must be recorded within two years)

Students can obtain a certification before admission to the university (i.e. certifications obtained for admission may be represented for the registration) or during their university studies.

Certificates may be reconded before the first exam session the student can sign up for (therefore after finalizing enrollment, on condition that the certification is still valid).

In any case, the related credit points and the grade are awarded for the year of studies the language is positioned in. 

Only credit points relating to the first language are counted for the number of credit points needed to proceed to the second year of studies and only if the certification is submitted by 12 July 2019.
If the certification is submitted in a year after the year of studies the language is positioned in, the student will appear to be as a student who has not yet passed the course for the previous year/s until it is recorded.

The result of the certification is recorded in the student’s academic career as a grade out of thirty, upon conversion based on the tables published on the website.

With reference to recording a certification for the first language in the student’s academic career, the following possibilities exist:

• If the certification submitted is of B2 level, it can be recorded only as first year exam;
• if the certification submitted is of general language C1 or C2 level or legal or economics language or a B2, C1 or C2 level legal or economics exam, it can be recorded, upon the choice of the student, as a first year exam or as both first and second year exams or as a second year exam only.

To record the certification, students must bring the original certificate to the Office of the Language Center in person and should not register for the Bocconi exam.
To obtain a certification during university studies, the Language Center offers:

• An information and orientation service
• Courses to prepare certain certifications (see 2.2.4.1.)
• Preparatory materials and examples of exam at the language laboratory
• A Test Center for some English certifications of the British Council / Cambridge English Language Assessment English certifications.

The registration method and the whole procedure entirely follow the rules of the Examination Institute.

Please note that the following rules will be effective staring in May 2019 for all language courses (first and second) and for all students, regardless of whether or not they have duly passed the exam.

For language exams prior to those held in January 2019, the rules set out in the course syllabi in the 2017-2018 a.y. or earlier (based on the a.y. in which the language course is recorded on the student’s study plan) apply.

Exams follow the language standards applied for international certifications. The exam is composed of a written exam and an oral exam, both of which are compulsory; admission to the oral part depends on passing the written exam with a grade of at least 18/30.
Both the first and the second language include a final compulsory exam in the second semester of the year of teaching in question.

The final grade is calculated upon considering both the final grade and active participation of the student at lectures (at least 75% of lectures must be attended by registering through the "Attendance" procedure) plus completion of activities indicated in class by the faculty.

Both for first and second language a single level of the Bocconi exam equal to the minimum exit level is envisaged, with the exception of the 2nd year English exam (see paragraph 2.2.2).

The Language Center offers courses both to prepare for various international certification and for the Bocconi exam.

All students are automatically allocated a class group for preparing the Bocconi exam: those students who wish to attend a course to prepare a certification must register through the yoU@B Diary (see paragraph 3.1.4.1.).

For English first language (in the second semester of the first year of studies).

For  Spanish  second language (in the first semester of the third year):

• DELE, Diploma de Español Lengua Extranjera, Nivel Inicial,  general language, B1 level, Instituto Cervantes.


Semester courses provide 48 hours of teaching, except for the IELTS C1 course, which provides 24 hours, while the year-long course provides 96 hours.

Courses are offered only to students who have the language course code included in their study plan.

These are offered to a limited number of students: admission will be possible while places are available, on a first-come, first served basis.




In order to benefit from the course, the student must have a knowledge of the language equal to at least the level immediately below the level of the course’s certification.





At the beginning of lessons, it will be possible to evaluate the adequacy of preparation for the course with the teacher and, if this proves to be insufficient, to return to the class for the internal exam automatically assigned in the first semester.




Courses are activated only if an adequate number of students enroll.

Courses last one year: the first language in the first and second year provides 96 contact hours and the second language in the third year provides 128 hours.

In addition to lecture attendance, learning foreign languages requires a constant commitment to self-study which includes various activities/assignments, based on specific information provided by the teaching staff in class and available in the course syllabus and/or BB, with the use of different tools (e.g. exercise books, or multimedia courses/assignments available on the BBoard e-learning platform).

Moreover, the Language Center offers the following at the Language Laboratory:

• An advisory and information service for language study
• A tutoring service completed by the language teaching staff to support individual learning; this service is available upon reservationor a time slot;
  
• Various materials for preparing certifications and the Bocconi exam, which are available at the multimedia Library of the Laboratory and/or on the BBoard platform.

In general, students are advised to spend 3-5 hours per week on self-study.

Foreign languages can also be recorded as additional exams (French, English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and German), either by passing a Bocconi exam, or upon obtaining a certification.

With reference to the certifications, it must be included in the list of the certifications recognized, must be presented before its expiry date and must meet or exceed the minimum level for the specific study program.

Moreover, students can also record non-curricular languages in their study plan, as an additional course only.

The Language Center offers various courses for these languages, specifically: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian.

There are no Bocconi exams for these languages. Only results of international certifications converted into a mark out of 30 can be recorded. The certification must be included in the list of those recognized by the University and submitted before its expiry date. Specifically, and only for the languages indicated above, A1 is the minimum level accepted.

The program requirements of all degree programs offered at Bocconi University include a curricular computer skills course, which aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop IT knowledge and skills.

The computer skills course, Informatica per Giurisprudenza [Computer Skills for Law] (course code 50019), is held in the first semester of the second year. The course is worth 3 credit points. Students who do not yet possess the complete ECDL certification may take it at Bocconi University. Exams are held each week according to a calendar which is regularly updated. Students can purchase the ECDL products (at a discounted cost) online, view the calendar and sign up for the modules via the yoU@B student Diary, through the ECDL IT certifications box.

The Integrated Master of Arts in Giurisprudenza [Law] (CLMG) allows students to include an educational experience of an internship/apprenticeship/training (hereinafter internship) or similar activity, worth 6 credit points, in their study plans. As an alternative to an internship, students can enter an elective course only.

Students may participate in other internship experiences (not worth credit points) during the program or after graduation, which do not have curricular value and for which the information in the following paragraphs and sections does not apply: Duration, Positioning, Internship Recognition, Activities Similar to Internships and Recognition.
In this chapter, "curricular internship" exclusively stands for curricular internships for credit.

• Minimum 12 weeks full-time, if in Italy;

• Minimum 10 weeks full-time, if outside Italy.

• Markets and External Affair Division (see below);

• School of Law;

• Found by the student, at highly qualified companies only. In this case, the Program Director and the Internship Office will carefully monitor the internship request. Students should ask the company to get in touch with the University well in advance of the internship, by accessing the JobGate Portal.

• Bocconi & Jobs Italy and abroad: career fair which allows students to meet with numerous professional offices, companies and institutions from all sectors;

• Investment Bank Weekends: Meetings with the leading institutions of the sector;

• Company meetings with employers on and off campus: presentations on programs for hiring potential candidates at companies; networking activities, individual recruiting meetings with company representatives (Drop-In);

• Cv@B: online student and graduate CV books visible to and searchable by employers.

1. As the sole promoter of curricular internships, the University prepares all the necessary legal documentation, checks the quality of the training project, and provides insurance coverage.
2. Once the student (hereinafter, trainee) has been selected and the internship details have been agreed, the company fills out the internship document (entering information and content) on JobGate, by the Monday preceding the start of the internship. Internships always start on a Monday. The information relating to the internship will be visible by the trainee on JobGate, in the area “My Internships” of the yoU@B Diary, so that he/she can check that the content agreed upon by with the company during interviews are coherent with the specified content. The confirmation is valid as internship acceptance.
3. The Internship Office checks the training project and, after checking the coherence and its quality in accordance with current laws, confirms the internship. The University can negotiate the content and conditions of the internship with the company and, in case of no agreement, may refuse to start the internship. 
4. Before starting the internship, the student must:
   
   • request advance authorization from the University and wait until it has been granted;
   • access the course “Internship...Let’s Go!” available under Extracurricular Courses on the Bocconi BBoard website.
5. On the first day of the internship, the company downloads the internship document from JobGate and it is signed by the trainee along with a company legal representative or delegated party. The original document is promptly sent by the company to the Internship Office so it can be signed by the University.
   

• Evaluation form filled out by the student via the yoU@B student Diary together with the final report (this report is only for internships completed outside Italy);

• Evaluation form from the company tutor filled out on JobGate. The evaluation by the company tutor includes the skills acquired.

1. Before the beginning of the experience and after viewing the internship on JobGate and confirming it, the student must request advance authorization, by accessing the area ‘My internships’ and clicking on ‘Request advance authorization’.
2. The request is automatically made viewable to the Program Director or his/her delegate who can give his/her approval, reject it or, for more information, ask the student to schedule a meeting. 
3. The student views the request outcome on JobGate in the ‘My internships’ area.
   

• the student has to graduate before the end of the internship.
• the student applies for a scholarship.

• complete the end-of-internship documents within the time needed to record the internship in the student’s academic career;

• make an explicit request for recognition for early ending of the internship via the Help&Contact procedure.

As the internship is not a job by Law, it is not paid. At their discretion, companies may grant a monetary contribution.

For unpaid internships carried out abroad, for which no compensation is provided (no monetary contribution), scholarships may be given by Bocconi University.

Depending on the specific internship requirements, the following may be provided:

• Fondo Sostegno Giovani scholarship

• ERASMUS+ scholarship
• Bocconi scholarship for international mobility
• Contribution for internships at the MAECI institutions (Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation)
• Contribution for internships at international organizations

The Fondo Sostegno Giovani scholarship, the ERASMUS+ scholarship and the contribution for internships at the MAECI Institution are incompatible with each other.
It is possible to cumulate the Bocconi scholarship with one of the other types of contributions (no other combinations of the scholarships described above are possible).

• enrolled in the fifth year (not enrolled beyond the duration of the program) of the Integrated Master of Arts in Law;
• have earned credits in the following subject groups: Diritto privato [Private Law] (IUS/01), Diritto processuale civile [Civil Procedural Law] (IUS/15), Diritto penale [Criminal Law] (IUS/17), Diritto processuale penale [Criminal Procedural Law] (IUS/16), Diritto amministrativo [Administrative Law] (IUS/10), Diritto costituzionale [Constitutional Law] (IUS/08), Diritto dell’Unione Europea [European Union Law] (IUS 14);
• have earned credits for all the educational activities in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years and recorded them in their academic career.
  

• in the event that the student did not complete a study abroad experience in the fourth year: have earned credits for educational activities in the fourth year and recorded them in their academic career;

• in the event that the student completed a long study abroad period in their fourth year (at least one semester): have earned at least 60 credits for educational activities in the fourth and fifth years and recorded them in their academic career.

• attainment of initial authorization;
• duration of at least 6 calendar months and at least 288 hours and student participation in at least 12 hearings.
  If the student graduates before the end of the six months, the early traineeship shall be valid if it lasted at least 5 months and, in any case, at least 288 hours;
  

• attainment of final validation;

• graduation within 12 months after the end of the early traineeship;

• confirmation of enrollment in the register of trainee lawyers within 90 days after graduation (the graduation certificate or equivalent document must be submitted to the Bar Association).

• Declaration of completed internship: trainees must provide the address of the recipient of the declaration.
  In order to obtain such declaration, the internship needs to have already been recorded on JobGate and, in the case of curricular internships for credit, it needs to have been recorded on the academic career.
  

• To support a visa application or request: the student must provide the name and address of the company/intuition/diplomatic office/immigration office to address the declaration and the characteristics of the declaration.

Eligibility and requirements
Students can take the semester abroad just one time during their fourth and fifth years. Therefore students regularly enrolled in the third or fourth year of the Integrated Master of Arts Program can apply.

Students are allowed to enroll in a semester abroad at one of the partner universities only if they pass the selection, which is based on merit and language skills.

Bocconi University has identified a number of schools, mainly members of its international network, that have accepted such students in the past. Any other applications for alternatives must be examined individually beforehand by Markets and External Affairs Division-Study Abroad. The application, accompanied by a motivational letter and information about the chosen university, must be submitted to Markets and External Affairs Division-Study Abroad before enrolling at the foreign university for a Free-Mover Semester Program.

After the publication of the case in September, teacms must submit two memorandums by November. If a team is selected for the Regional Finals, it must prepare for the oral pleadings which will be presented before the European judges.
