Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is understanding the process of knowledge creation and diffusion in companies, universities and public research organizations. In particular it explores the relationship between intellectual property rights, innovation activities and knowledge transfer. Particular attention is devoted on how patents, copyright and trademarks may help or constrain the diffusion of knowledge at the international level (e.g. developing countries) or between different institutions (such as univeristies and business companies).
The course analyses the welfare implications of the recent reinforcement and expansion of patent rights and copyright (databases, software, living organisms). It benefits from the contribution of practitioners, international organizations (UN, WIPO, EPO) and experts. Finally student groups are required to analyse specific cases using the tools and the material previously discussed in class.
