Course Objectives

This course provides an undergraduate-level introduction to organization theory. The course has two main objectives:
  • Provide an overview of the key issues, theories and discussions within organization theory.
  • Enable the use of organizational theory as decision support by means of applying theory to practical organizational challenges.

Course Content Summary

The course takes a multi-dimensional perspective at organizations. First, organizational issues are linked to different levels of analysis, from the level of individuals to the level of institutions. Second, organizations are analyzed by means of different theories lenses rooted in psychology, sociology, and economics. Each theory is used to explain systematic differences in organizational behavior and outcomes. However, it is stressed and exemplified throughout that a deep and comprehensive understanding of organizational phenomena of managerial relevance requires the use of multiple perspectives.

Specifically, the course covers the following issues and topics:
  • Formal / informal organizational structures;
  • Organizations as governance structures;
  • Organizational routines;
  • Organizational culture;
  • Interorganizational relations;
  • Institutional theory;
  • Knowledge and learning;
  • Organizational change.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

For Attending students and for non-attending students :
Grading is based on: in class participation, a group project, a class quiz (multiple choice) and a final written exam.
The final written exam is the same for attending and non-attending students.
