Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is understanding knowledge creation and diffusion in companies, universities and public research organizations. It explores how intellectual property rights (IPRs) affect innovation activities and knowledge transfer. The course takes two perspectives: first the use of IPRs as a firm strategic asset to transfer knowledge and appropriate their innovations, second the social and welfare implications of different IPR systems. Particular attention is devoted on how IPRs affect the transfer of scientific discoveries from universities and public research organizations. The course analyses the effects of the recent global reinforcement and expansion of patent rights and copyright (e.g. TRIPs agreement and databases, software, living organisms) in particular in IT and Life Sciences. It will benefit from the contribution of practitioners, international organizations (UN, WIPO, WHO, EPO) and experts. Finally student groups are required to analyse specific cases using the tools and the material previously discussed in class.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

For non attending students

The students not attending the course have to elaborate a written exam based on the references of the course. 

For attending Students
The course is organized in two main parts. Attending students have to present two brief group works, accounting for 2/3 of the final mark.at the end of each part. One third of the mark is based on the final written examination. Class participation in the discussion of the case studies and of other students’ presentations is also be taken into consideration.
