MISSION

The aim of the course is to enable students to reach a confident B2 level in legal areas.

CONTENT SUMMARY

The course is divided into ten core topic areas. Around these topic areas students practice and develop the appropriate skills expected at this level. There are regular focus on real life case studies.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course student will be able to...
  • Confidently deal with different types of text, such as business publications and correspondence.
  • Satisfactorily produce different pieces of writing, such as letters, reports, proposals and emails.
  • Adequately follow and understand a range of spoken materials, such as interviews, discussions and presentations.

    ATTENDING AND NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS

    At the end of the 2nd semester of the  second year, there is a written and oral final exam. This is mandatory. The format of the written exam is as follows:

    • Listening comprehension and related test (30 marks).
    • Reading Comprehension regarding academic-legal English topics (40 marks).
    • Writing an essay on a given argument - about 220 words (30 marks).

    The mark is initially expressed in hundredths and then converted into thirty. Access to the oral exam is only possible once a student has passed the written exam (18/30). For the oral exam students must show the ability to summarize and discuss 3 articles of a minimum 1.250 words on topics related to the syllabus Final year exam syllabus  is the same for attending and not attending students.     The aim of the course is to enable students to reach a confident C1 level in legal areas, which means they can: - Actively participate in formal discussions on legal issues. - Be able to produce professional looking documents by developing arguments, providing motivation, synthesizing information. - Present in a consistent and detailed way, documents related to a professional environment.

    Prerequisites

    As this is a C1 level course: to fully participate and to get full benefit from this year long course students should have a strong pass grade of over 25/30 in the 50127 exam.

    MISSION

    To provide a high level practice of language skills within legal contexts while at the same providing proof of the level of English required to work in an international legal context or the ability to follow a course of study at university level. The mission of this course is to explore some fundamental areas in the legal environment offering students the opportunity to develop and practice the skills they need in their professional or academic lives.
