Francesco C. Billari is Bocconi's Dean of the Faculty. Professor of Demography with the Department of Policy Analysis and Public Management, President of the Dondena Centre for Research on Social Dynamics and Public Policies. He joined the Bocconi faculty in 2017. He is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA).

He is currently an Editor of Population Studies and a Deputy Editor of Demography. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Life Course Resarch from its foundation as a journal to 2016. 

Previously, he worked at the Department of Sociology (where he was Head of Department between 2012 and 2015), and Nuffield College the University of Oxford between 2012 and 2017 (where he was a Professorial Fellow); at Bocconi (where he was Pro-Rector for Development 2009-2012) between 2002 and 2012; at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research between 1999 and 2002. He held a visiting position at the Population Studies Center of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently a Research Affiliate. 

His main interest is the study of population change, family and the life course. More specifically, he has worked on fertility and family change, the transition to adulthood, life course analysis, population forecasting, agent-based modelling. He has collaborated in designing comparative survey-based studies, namely the Generations and Gender Programme and a rotating module for the European Social Survey. He is the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council Advanced Investigator Grant Discont (2017-2022).
 
He holds a Ph.D. in Demography from the University of Padua (1998), and a “Laurea” in Economics (specialisation in Statistics) from Bocconi (1994). He has been a Doctoral Fellow at the Center for Sociology and the Study of the Life Course of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (1997). He has been awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa by the Faculty of Economic, Social, Political and Communication Sciences of the Université Catholique de Louvain. He is an elected fellow of the European Academy of Sociology and a Foreign Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2014). In 2012, he has been awarded the Clifford C. Clogg Award of the Population Association of America
 
He is Honorary President, previously President and Secretary-General/Treasures of the European Association for Population Studies. He is President of the Council of Advisors of Population Europe. He is a council member of the British Association for Population Studies.
