Learning by Managing: A Field Experiment with Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Simon Quinn (University of Oxford)

Abstract

We run a novel management placement for aspiring entrepreneurs.  Participants are placed in established firms for one month each, in order to shadow a middle manager in her or his daily work.  We hypothesise that this experience provides a useful opportunity for young, highly educated and motivated individuals to learn the skills of management, and a stepping stone to new career opportunities.  Our experiment features random assignment of aspiring entrepreneurs to participate in the programme, random assignment of potential host firms to participate in the programme, and a Gale-Shapley matching algorithm to assign aspiring entrepreneurs to host firms.  We find that the treated individuals aim for more qualified and better paid wage jobs as they enter the labour market.  We find no effects on either intended or realised entry into running a firm, but we find that firms among treated individuals are better managed.
